This photo of Sudbury students in 1956 illustrates the mixture of modern, folk and ballet Nancy taught in her schools.

At the Sudbury recital of 1957, Nancy’s Advanced students presented a work titled “The Sorcerer”. Standing at the back as the Sorcerer is Tini Pel. Pel would continue Nancy’s work founding the Sudbury Arts Guild and the Nickel Belt Ballet Company.

Nancy Lima Dent 107a, b, c
From Sudbury Daily Star, 25 May 1956, p. 17

Nancy Lima Dent 108a, b was folded in half and wrapped around items 109 to 114

Nancy Lima Dent 115a, b
The front of the clipping is in English but the back is in a Slavic language so both were copied in case the back text gives clues to the paper’s origin, dated 1956 in pen on the front

Nancy Lima Dent 121a, b, c
The front and back of this 8.5x14 sheet were clearly a house program but the inside had no program information and Nancy had used it to type up notes about classes.

Nancy Lima Dent 122a-e
Item e was folded in half and inserted into the program

Nancy Lima Dent 129a-b
The reverse side (b) appears to be a part of a report though the rest of the report is not in her files

132 – 204
These are all in a subfolder marked “Teaching Notes, Sudbury and Garson, 1955-1957”. Some of them were written or typed on the backs of recycled paper but if the information on the back was career related, I scanned both sides. That’s why you will see numbers with a and b on them and yet the scans will seem unrelated.

GRAND FINALE Music Kabalevsky Ensemble O CANADA FAREWELL MESSAGE FROM NANCY LIMA DENT Dear Friends : I go away with the feeling of having learned much more than I have given a feeling of richness and warmth achieved through the experi ence of working with many peoples of diverse nationalities and beliefs a feeling that perhaps I may have helped to enrich the lives of many with music and new ideas a deeper feeling of what it means to be a Canadian . I hope that I have helped to lay the foundation for schools that will develop and train many more young dancers in the Nickel District . The mothers and fathers who have worked with us to make all of this possible have also learned some of the art of costuming , decor and organization necessary to a dance school . A number of our students have developed to a stage where they can be regarded as student teachers . And I am sure that the Union has been learning the very ticklish business of having a dance school within the scope of their responsibilities . I have a deep sense of gratitude to the Union and the people who have made it possible for me to work here the past two seasons . The dance school can continue with your will and effort and I am certain will go on to greater achievements . I would like you to feel free to ask my advice or assistance in any way possible in the future . My husband , son and I thank all of our friends who have made our stay here a memorable experience and one which we shall treasure for the rest of our lives . NANCY
