The description of this Item
Michel Fokine's Ballet Russes, Scheherazade, presents an orientalist perspective of the Middle East and portrays Middle Eastern women as extremely erotic and sexualized. To this day, designers and choreographers continue to use orientalist designs to present the East as an exotic place. Inspired by this drastic difference between the true reality and a Western perspective, this collage compares a Middle Eastern version of the story and character of Scheherazade (left) to the lustful and orientalist depiction presented in the popular ballet (right).
