Musical Theatre Division BORIS ROUBAKINE Studied on scholarship with Mathilde de Ribaupierre in Lausanne , later in Paris with Paul Loyonnet ( piano ) and Paul Dukas ( composition ) . After several years of teaching in Switzerland , he became the assistant artist to the great violinist Bronislaw Huberman . Taught at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto for many years and travels through Canada and Europe as concert pianist , lecturer , adjudicator and exam iner . Now on the faculty Department of Music , University of Calgary . July 1st to August 10th Lectures and rehearsals , 30 hours per week mini mum . Monday through Friday . Instructors : George Palmer , Jack Robertson and others . Tuition fee $ 125.00 . Minimum enrollment 40 students . MUSIC DIVISION STAFF DR . ERNESTO VINCI Head of the Singing and Opera Division since 1949. After an extensive operatic and concert career in Europe , was invited to come to Canada as head of the Vocal Department of the Halifax Conservatory of Music where he remained until 1945 . Since then he has been a member of the Faculty of Music of the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory's School of Music . Has adjudicated Music Festivals from coast to coast for many years . Among his pupils are many of Canada's most prominent singers . DAVID MARTIN Born in Winnipeg , he first played in public at the age of eight . He later won a scholarship to the Royal Academy where he is now a Fellow and Professor . Well known as a recitalist in all parts of Britain , he broadcasts frequently with the B.B.C. Activities also include lecture re citals , adjudicating and summer schools . In 1967 he was guest instructor with the National Youth Orchestra , Toronto . MUSICAL THEATRE STAFF GEORGE L. PALMER Director of the Musical Theatre Divi sion . Has had extensive professional experience in Canada and abroad . Master's Degree from Yale University , where he specialized in Production , Design and Lighting . Spent two years with Montreal Repertory Theatre and was Drama Advisor at Memorial Uni versity , Newfoundland for three years . Presently Director of the Ottawa Little Theatre W. JAMES CRAIG Graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music . Coach of the Royal Conservatory Opera School for eight seasons . Musical Director for five Canadian Opera Com pany Tours and Conductor of " Madama Butterfly , " " I Pagliacci " and " La Bohème " in Toronto . Recipient of two Canada Council grants to study at the Royal Academy of Music in England and with maestro Ricci of the Rome Opera . At present a member of the Sadler's Wells Opera Company of London , England . JACK ROBERTSON Studied dancing in Toronto with Boris Volkoff and Betty Oliphant . Performed with the C.B.C. in Toronto prior to moving to Ottawa in 1964. Has since had considerable experience teaching , choreographing and performing in various theatrical productions . Mornings CONSTANCE FISHER Stage Director , Opera Division . Gradu ate of Royal Conservatory in piano and voice . Has sung many leading roles in Banff School major productions . Soloist with Canadian Opera Company since 1956 , singing principal roles in Toronto and on seven national tours . Has also toured the United States with the Gold ovsky Grand Opera Theatre . Has ap peared frequently on C.B.C. radio and television . Presently Assistant Director on production staff of the Canadian Opera Company GWEN BEAMISH Studied piano with Boris Berlin , Alex ander Uninsky and Boris Roubakine . After attaining L.R.T.C. diploma joined the faculty of the Royal Conservatory of Music , Toronto . Completed Master Classes at the Institute de Ribaupierre in Switzerland and at Stratford , Ontario under Claude Arrau . Has presented a series of weekly television programs in music education for the Michigan State Department of Education . The course itself will be a practical one in the tech niques of Musical Theatre including : Lectures in the history of Musical Theatre , illus trated by recordings and scene readings from well known librettos . A class in stage movement and basic jazz pertinent to the needs of musical comedy . Vocal training and production for musical theatre , including musical coaching in specific roles as well as preparation for the tour production . Classes in acting and stage performance . The Musical Theatre Division has produced four major productions including an original work commis sioned especially for the Banff School , and last year the first Broadway Musical " Bye Bye Birdie " . This year another Broadway Musical “ Wonderful Town " ( based on the stage play " My Sister Eileen " ) will be produced and presented in Banff and on tour . With a happily melodic score by Leonard Bernstein , it is one of the gayest , smartest shows of all time . Qualified students in the Musical Theatre Division will be eligible to participate in the Major Production . Toured Japan in 1964 as accompanist for the noted Japanese soprano Teruko Uraguchi . Is a faculty member of the Cornish School of Allied Arts in Seattle . GEORGE BROUGH Accompanist , Conductor and Musical Director for the Opera Workshop Pro duction . Conductor of the Banff Festival Ballet Orchestra . Doctor of Music ( Ox ford University ) . Fellow of the Royal College of Organists . Has been an assis tant conductor of the Canadian Opera Company for several years and Musical Director for four Canadian Opera Com pany tours . Several seasons with the Vancouver International Festival . NOTE Students who enroll in this Division should have had some experience in theatre , preferably musical theatre , dancing , singing , etc. and should attach a brief resume outlining background and experience to their Registra tion Forms . FLORENCE HOOTON One of England's foremost solo cellists , she is a Fellow and Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music , Lon don England . She studied the cello with Douglas Cameron at the Royal Aca demy of Music , and in Switzerland with Feurmann . Has played extensively in concert , as soloist with England's lead ing orchestras , on radio and on tele vision . ELIZABETH BENSON GUY One of Canada's leading sopranos , she has won praise from music critics wherever she has appeared . Made her debut at Carnegie Hall in New York . Has appeared with many of the major orchestras across Canada . Was a mem ber of the Canadian Opera Company . Sings regularly on C.B.C. Appeared in recital at Expo in October , 1967 prior to leaving for further study in Europe on a Canada Council grant . BRODERYCK OLSON Assistant , Strings Division . Studied in Edmonton , Puerto Rico , and at the Juil liard School of Music in New York . Pre sently in Bachelor of Music program at University of Alberta , Edmonton , major ing in Violin Performance . Teaches in Edmonton where he is Concert Master University Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra . STEVEN PETTES Born in Hungary . Studied trumpet at the London Conservatory . Is now principal trumpeter with both the St. Catharines Symphony and the Hamilton Philhar monic . Has taught wind instruments in the St. Catharines Public Schools for several years and is a lecturer in Brass at McMaster University , Hamilton , On tario .
